A 50 amp car charger outlet prevents Level 2 EV chargers from power throttling, voltage drops, overheating circuit components, tripping off the EV charger circuit breaker, reduced efficiency, or potential damage to both the EV charger and the vehicle’s onboard charging system due to a mismatched power supply.

A 40-amp EV charger requires a 50-amp circuit per NEC 625.41, following the 125% rule for continuous loads. It typically uses a 50 amp car charger outlet (NEMA 14-50 or NEMA 6-50 outlet) with #6 AWG copper wire and must be on a dedicated circuit (NEC 625.40).

The most widely used configuration for 50A car charger outlets is the NEMA 14-50 four-prong setup. This outlet type is designed for 240-volt circuits and features:
