SIEMENS 2P 60A EV Charger Emergency Shutoff Review

Siemens 2P 60A 240V outdoor safety switch provides reliable emergency shut-off for hardwired 48A EV chargers with a durable, compact design and visible blade action.

When hardwiring a Tesla Universal Wall Connector for my client, I knew I needed a reliable EV charger emergency shut-off device from a known and trusted brand to protect the system and give easy control over power. After evaluating several options, I chose the SIEMENS 2P 60A 240V General Duty Safety Switch, and it has proven to be a solid choice.

Compact and Sturdy Design

What immediately stood out was how compact and sturdy the switch is. It’s not a bulky, oversized unit that takes up unnecessary space. This made installation in the client’s outdoor charging panel straightforward and efficient. The manageable size and well-thought-out design helped me maintain a clean, organized setup without any space issues.

Visible Blade and Secure Operation

One feature I especially appreciate is the visible blade with double-break switch action. Being able to see the contacts open and close gives clear confirmation that power is fully disconnected when the switch is off. This detail is invaluable for safety during maintenance or troubleshooting. The switch operates with a crisp, firm action, feeling solid and dependable.

Quick-Make, Quick-Break Mechanism & Durable Indicator

The quick-make, quick-break mechanism ensures smooth, safe switching every time. This is crucial when working on EV charging equipment, as it reduces concerns about arcing or unreliable contact. Additionally, the ON/OFF indication embedded directly into the steel door is very durable. It remains clear even after prolonged outdoor exposure, making it easy to verify switch status under all conditions.

Weather-Resistant and Built to Last

Given the outdoor installation, the switch’s weather-resistant build is reassuring for hardwired EV charger setups, including commercial 48A installations. The robust steel enclosure shows no signs of corrosion or wear, even after months in challenging environments, and is clearly built to withstand the elements long term.

NEC-Compliant Installation Setup

The non-fusible design integrates cleanly into the electric vehicle branch circuit and reduces long-term maintenance by eliminating fuse inspection and replacement.

Because this is a true load-bearing disconnect, the full 48A continuous load from the 60A branch circuit passes through the switch, making contact integrity and overall build quality critical.

Overcurrent protection is provided upstream by a dedicated 60-amp double-pole EV charger breaker with #4 AWG solid copper conductors rated for 75 °C, installed in outdoor-rated conduit.

This installation fully supports 48A EV chargers, which are hard-wired and comply with NEC requirements, with the switch serving as the local disconnecting means mandated under NEC Article 625.

For clarity, code compliance, and safety, we applied a custom label on the front cover stating that only the Autel MaxiCharger 80A EV Charger is affected by the emergency shut-off device, preventing confusion during operation or servicing. The most suitable placement is on the front cover, positioned just below the factory label for maximum visibility.

Practical Everyday Use

In daily use, this safety switch offers straightforward and reliable operation. When my client or the emergency response team needs to power down the charger for any reason, flipping the switch is quick and sure. Its compact form factor keeps the client’s charging panel neat and leaves room for potential future expansions.

Minor Considerations

If there’s one minor downside, it’s the absence of a fuse inside the switch itself. However, given the proper upstream dedicated EV charger circuit breaker, this simplifies the system and reduces the number of parts that could require maintenance or replacement.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the SIEMENS 2P 60A 240V General Duty Safety Switch has proven to be a dependable, well-designed component for my client’s EV charging setup. It’s practical, durable, and user-friendly, a great choice for anyone needing a quality safety switch for outdoor EV charger installations.
