The Lectron Level 1/2 Tesla/NACS Charger is a portable EV charger offering flexible dual-level charging with NEMA 5-15 and 14-50 plug options. It’s designed for Tesla vehicles and other EVs equipped with the North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector, providing a reliable and versatile charging experience whether you’re at home or on the go.
But how does it perform in real life? And is it a good fit for Tesla or NACS EV owners compared to other portable or wall-mounted NACS chargers? In this review, we break down its features, charging speeds, installation considerations, and who should consider this charger.
Lectron Level 1/2 Tesla/NACS Charger Review
The Lectron charger is essentially a dual-level portable EVSE that plugs into either a standard 120V NEMA 5-15 outlet (Level 1) or a 240V NEMA 14-50 outlet (Level 2). It comes with interchangeable plugs, making it highly adaptable for different charging setups, whether at home, at an RV park, or while traveling.
The unit uses the NACS connector, Tesla’s new North American Charging Standard, ensuring seamless compatibility with Tesla Model 3, Y, S, and X, as well as other NACS-equipped electric vehicles. For EV owners who want to future-proof their charging gear or travel without hauling bulky adapters, this charger simplifies the experience.
Charging Power and Speed
- Level 1 (120V NEMA 5-15): Delivers up to 12 amps at 120 volts, producing approximately 1.4 kW of charging power. This typically adds 3–5 miles of range per hour, depending on the vehicle’s efficiency. Level 1 charging is considered a slow trickle charge and is best suited for emergency charging, overnight top-ups, or low-mileage daily driving when no higher-voltage outlet is available.
- Level 2 (240V NEMA 14-50): Provides up to 40 amps at 240 volts, delivering about 9.6 kW of charging power. This can add roughly 30–40 miles of driving range per hour. As a portable NACS Level 2 charger, it offers significantly faster charging than standard 120V outlets while maintaining the flexibility to plug into compatible outlets at home, RV parks, or other locations with 240V service. This makes it a practical solution for drivers who want faster overnight charging without installing a permanently hardwired wall unit.
Installation and Portability
One of the biggest strengths of the Lectron charger is its portability and plug interchangeability. Unlike hardwired Tesla chargers that require professional installation and permanent mounting, the Lectron lets you swap between a standard household plug and a higher-powered outlet plug without hassle.
This makes it a great option for:
- Renters who can’t install a dedicated home charger.
- Travelers who need a charger that works at different locations.
- Tesla/NACS EV owners who want a flexible backup charger.
However, to unlock full Level 2 charging speeds, a NEMA 14-50 outlet must be installed by a qualified electrician, which adds to the cost.
Safety Performance
The Lectron Level 1/2 Charger comes with EV charger built-in safety features, including overvoltage, overcurrent, and over-temperature protection, which remained active throughout testing to keep both the charger and vehicle secure.
The release button provided a clean disconnect every time, even after repeated plug-ins, helping prevent wear on the charging port.
We installed the Lectron Level 1/2 EV Charger on our test bench using a Siemens QF250A 50A 2-Pole GFCI breaker for the 40A Level 2 configuration, with branch circuit wiring shown in the attached diagram to ensure fault protection and NEC code compliance.
Under the 2023 NEC, Article 625.54 requires GFCI protection only for plug-in EV chargers, while Article 210.8(A) applies to outlets located outdoors, in garages, or within six feet of water.
That said, we recommend installing this charger with a double-pole 240V GFCI breaker in all setups. Our Complete Guide to GFCI Breaker for EV Charger explains why this added protection ensures full NEC compliance and delivers consistent safety, whether indoors or outdoors, even when charging near water sources.
Switching between Level 1 at 12A and Level 2 at 40A felt seamless. During testing, the charger delivered reliable performance across both modes without overheating or power drops.
Cosmetically, it’s a step up from the Lectron Level 1 J1772 EV Charger (WiFi) with App Control. Both come with a 16 ft cord, but this dual-level model adds a more refined build, upgraded housing, and a sleeker, modern alien-like finish. The integrated release button and enhanced safety protections give it a more premium appearance while also improving long-term durability.
Smart Features
It’s worth noting that the standard Lectron Level 1/2 (12A & 40A) Tesla NACS EV Charger is not a fully “smart” charger out of the box. It provides basic real-time feedback via LED indicators but lacks Wi-Fi and app connectivity. Remote scheduling and energy tracking are only available if you opt for the dedicated Wi-Fi version.
The Tesla Mobile Connector has a similar story. Gen 1 and Gen 2 offer no app connectivity or smart features, relying entirely on the vehicle’s interface to manage charging.
The Tesla Gen 3 Mobile Connector does step things up, introducing Wi-Fi support for firmware updates and integration with the Tesla vehicle app for scheduling and controls. However, these features are only fully unlocked for Tesla vehicle owners.
For non-Tesla NACS owners, the Gen 3 still falls short on standalone smart functionality. If remote control, real-time monitoring, and advanced scheduling matter to you (independent of your vehicle), the Lectron Wi-Fi version is the stronger choice across the board.
Charging Experience
The charger’s LED indicators provide clear, real-time feedback on charging status, while the app (if available) allows remote control and monitoring. The NACS connector has a sturdy feel, with a secure latch and easy-release button similar to Tesla’s official chargers.
Its dual-level flexibility means you’re never stuck with just slow charging, and you can easily adjust your charging setup depending on available outlets.
Who Should Consider the Lectron Level 1/2 Tesla/NACS Charger?
This charger is ideal for:
- Tesla owners who want a portable alternative to the Tesla Mobile Connector or Wall Connector.
- Owners of new NACS-compatible EVs need a charger built for this growing standard.
- EV drivers who want a flexible charger for both home and travel.
- Renters or those who want to avoid permanent electrical modifications.
- Users who appreciate smart charging features like app control and scheduling.
Lectron vs Tesla Mobile Connector
For users needing a portable NACS charger, the Lectron Level 1/2 charger is an excellent choice, especially for non-Tesla owners with NACS-equipped EVs. It offers faster Level 2 charging at up to 40 amps, smart app controls, and greater plug durability. Meanwhile, the Tesla Mobile Connector remains the best fit for Tesla owners who want a simple, factory-supported portable charger with seamless Tesla firmware updates and integration.
In short, Lectron is our recommendation for non-Tesla NACS drivers, while Tesla owners are generally better served by the Mobile Connector for portable use.
If you mainly charge at home and want the fastest, most integrated experience, a dedicated hardwired Level 2 charger like the Tesla Wall Connector or Lectron’s own hardwired models may be better. But for convenience and versatility, Lectron’s Level 1/2 Tesla/NACS Charger hits the mark.
Lectron vs Tesla Wall Connector
Tesla Wall Connectors, including the Tesla Wall Connector and Tesla Universal Wall Connector, are hardwired, permanent chargers delivering up to 48 amps with fast charging speeds and advanced smart features such as load balancing, power sharing, and seamless integration with Tesla’s energy ecosystem.
They also support future-proof EV charging capabilities like bi-directional charging (vehicle-to-home/grid), which is currently available and expanding specifically with the Tesla Universal Wall Connector. Built for daily home use, they offer exceptional durability and reliability.
The Lectron Level 1/2 charger doesn’t match this raw power or ruggedness, but excels in portability and flexibility. Ideal for renters, travelers, and NACS EV owners avoiding electrical upgrades.
For maximum speed, future-proofing, and advanced EV charging features, the Tesla Wall Connector remains the top choice, while Lectron is a strong portable alternative.
