Tesla Home Charging Guide

Across Tesla’s lineup, Level 2 home charging speeds depend on each model’s onboard charger rating, not the battery size. The Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive and some Model Y Standard Range variants support up to 7.7 kW (32A), while the Model 3 and Model Y Long Range and Performance, Model S, Model X, and Cybertruck all support up to 11.5 kW (48A) when paired with a 60-amp circuit.

Tesla Model 3 (Electric Luxury Compact Car)

The Tesla Model 3 remains the most popular Tesla for home charging setups, and its charging performance varies depending on the trim. The Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) version typically uses a battery rated between 57.5 and 62.3 kWh and includes a 7.7 kW onboard charger, drawing about 32 amps on a Level 2 circuit. This setup adds up to 30 miles of range per hour.

Meanwhile, the Long Range and Performance versions of the Model 3 come with larger batteries ranging from 75 to 82 kWh and a more capable 11.5 kW onboard charger that pulls up to 48 amps. With this configuration, you can add approximately 44 miles of range per hour, allowing for a nearly full overnight recharge. The higher-end trims are notably more efficient for daily charging convenience.

Tesla Model Y (Electric Luxury Compact SUV)

The Tesla Model Y follows a similar pattern. The Standard Range or RWD versions use roughly a 60 kWh battery and an onboard charger rated at either 7.7 kW or 11.5 kW, depending on the model year and market. At 7.7 kW, the Model Y adds about 30 miles of range per hour, while the higher 11.5 kW system increases that to around 44 miles per hour.

The Long Range and Performance trims of the Model Y come equipped with the full 11.5 kW onboard charger, identical to the Model 3 Long Range setup. These versions charge faster and are better suited for larger households or drivers covering more daily miles.

Tesla Model S (Electric Flagship Sedan)

The Tesla Model S represents the brand’s performance flagship and has historically offered the most robust home charging options. Current models feature a 95 to 100 kWh battery and a standard 11.5 kW onboard charger, which can add up to 41 miles of range per hour when connected to a 60-amp Wall Connector.

Some earlier versions of the Model S supported higher AC charging rates, up to 16.5 kW, or even 17.2 kW on select trims. Those configurations could add as much as 52 miles of range per hour, though current-generation Teslas have standardized around the 11.5 kW system for consistency and efficiency.

Tesla Model X (Electric Luxury 3-Row SUV)

The Model X shares many of its charging characteristics with the Model S but delivers slightly different real-world results due to its larger size and heavier weight. With a battery capacity of roughly 95 to 100 kWh and an 11.5 kW onboard charger, the Model X adds about 35 miles of range per hour at home.

Some older Model X vehicles supported 16.5 kW onboard charging, capable of reaching 48 miles per hour of added range. However, most current versions are limited to 11.5 kW. The Model X remains one of the fastest-charging electric SUVs available for home use.

The Tesla Cybertruck introduces a different scale of home charging, thanks to its massive battery pack estimated between 117 and 122.4 kWh. It uses the same 11.5 kW onboard charger as Tesla’s premium models, allowing for up to 30 miles of range per hour when charging on a 60-amp circuit.

Because of its weight and power-hungry drivetrain, the Cybertruck doesn’t gain as many miles per hour as smaller Teslas, even at the same power level. Still, the 11.5 kW capability ensures strong overnight recharging performance for daily driving or weekend adventure readiness.
