Unboxing the Evgoer J1772 40A EV Charger
We unboxed the Evgoer J1772 40A EV Charger and found a black carrying case with a green Evgoer logo on the side. Inside the case, the first item we saw was the instruction manual, which included setup and usage instructions with black-and-white visuals of the charger’s display.
Next, we found the EV charger itself—a visually appealing blue unit with a white connector and body. The blue cable had a rubbery texture, while the connector and wall unit felt plastic. The charger’s display provided essential charging information, and the wall unit featured two buttons: an amperage button and a timer button.
The charger came with a NEMA 14-50 input adapter. For use with a standard 120V NEMA 5-15 outlet, we needed to connect a “NEMA 5-15P to a 14-50R adapter” (sold separately) before plugging it in.
Charging Speed
The Evgoer 40A charger charges up to seven times faster than a standard Level 1 outlet. Operating at 40 amps and 240 volts, it delivers up to 9.6 kW, significantly reducing charging time. This speed is ideal for drivers who need quick recharges during the day or have larger EV batteries. With an adjustable current range from 8A to 40A, users can optimize charging based on power availability and vehicle compatibility.
Installation and Power Requirements
We installed the Evgoer J1772 40A EV Charger as both a Level 1 and Level 2 charging solution, testing it on different circuit configurations for optimal performance.
- Level 1 Charging (120V) – Connected via a NEMA 5-15 outlet, the charger operates at 16A, delivering up to 1.92 kW. This setup adds approximately 4–6 miles (6–10 km) of range per hour, making it suitable for overnight trickle charging.
- Level 2 Charging (240V) – Installed using a NEMA 14-50 outlet, the charger operates at up to 40A, delivering a powerful 9.6 kW output. This allows for fast charging speeds of up to 30 miles (48 km) of range per hour, significantly reducing charging time.
The Evgoer charger features automatic amperage detection, adjusting to the available circuit capacity and the vehicle’s maximum allowable input. To fully leverage this feature, we recommend configuring the circuit for maximum amperage based on your charging needs:
- For Level 1 (120V): Install on a dedicated 20A circuit breaker.
- For Level 2 (240V): Install a dedicated 50A circuit breaker for optimal performance.
Both configurations take advantage of automatic amperage detection, ensuring the charger optimally matches the circuit’s capacity and the vehicle’s charging capabilities.
Below are our installation diagrams for both configurations:
Evgoer J1772 40A EV Charger – NEMA 5-15 Outlet Installation
We installed the Evgoer J1772 40A EV Charger on a 120V NEMA 5-15 outlet using a “NEMA 5-15P to a 14-50R adapter” (sold separately), we used 12AWG copper wiring to connect the outlet to a dedicated 20A single-pole circuit breaker for a safe and efficient setup. The wiring was enclosed in a ½- to 1-inch conduit to ensure protection and organization, as shown in our circuit diagram below.
The charger automatically detected the 120V supply and adjusted its output to 16A. If the connected EV required less power, it dynamically reduced the input down to 8A. This setup delivers 0.96–1.92 kW, adding approximately 3–6 miles (5–10 km) of range per hour. It’s an excellent solution for overnight charging or when a 240V connection isn’t available.
What I didn’t like about this circuit was the use of an adapter. Although we didn’t experience any voltage issues because we ensured the adapter was properly plugged in, others using this setup—especially with a portable EV charger—might face loose connections due to movement. Using a NEMA 5-15P to 14-50R adapter introduces additional connection points, increasing resistance and the risk of voltage drop, which can reduce charging efficiency and generate excess heat.
Compatible NEMA 5-15 Outlets
These NEMA 5-15 outlets support Evgoer EV Charger Level 1 charging at 1.92 kW with a 12A continuous load. Built for durability, they work with 12 AWG wiring and handle frequent use without overheating.
Evgoer J1772 40A EV Charger – NEMA 14-50 Outlet Installation
For Level 2 charging, we installed the Evgoer J1772 40A EV Charger on a 240V circuit using a NEMA 14-50 outlet. To ensure safe and efficient operation, we used 6AWG copper wiring to connect the outlet to a dedicated 50A double-pole circuit breaker, with the wiring enclosed in a ¾- to 1-inch conduit for added protection and organization.
The portable charger automatically adjusts its output between 16–40A, depending on the vehicle’s power requirements. This setup delivers 3.8–9.6 kW, adding approximately 12–30 miles (19–48 km) of range per hour. It provides significantly faster charging compared to Level 1 and is ideal for daily home charging and high-mileage EV users.
Compatible NEMA 14-50 Outlets
These NEMA 14-50 outlets meet NEC standards for 40A continuous charging on a 50A breaker. They support 6 AWG wiring for stable, high-power EV charging.
Evgoer J1772 40A EV Charger NEMA Outlet Covers
We tested outlet covers compatible with the Evgoer J1772 40A EV Charger. We recommend these for NEMA outlet installations to block dust and moisture, prevent tampering, and reduce energy loss. Some models include overload indicators for added safety.
Real-World Performance
I tested the Evgoer 40A charger on multiple EVs, and it consistently delivered stable power—even when other appliances shared the circuit. It added 30 miles of range per hour to a Tesla Model 3 (via adapter) and 25 miles per hour to a Chevrolet Bolt, proving its efficiency across different models.
The charger’s automatic detection is activated instantly upon plugging in, sensing outlet voltage and the vehicle’s max allowable input current. In Auto Mode, it optimized the current for the fastest charge. Charging started within seconds and shut off automatically once the battery reached full capacity.
For manual control, I tested the adjustable output settings. On 120V (Level 1), it operated between 8A and 16A. On 240V (Level 2), it offered 8A, 16A, 32A, or 40A. Holding the current button for two seconds lets me select the desired amperage, while Manual Mode adjusts power flow to prioritize battery longevity.
I also tested the delayed charging feature, which allows scheduling from 1 to 24 hours—ideal for off-peak electricity rates. The display blinked to confirm, and once activated, the charger counted down before starting. Holding the button again instantly canceled the delay.
I ran the charger through heavy rain and sub-zero temperatures, and it performed flawlessly. The IP66 rating ensures it’s waterproof and dustproof, making it a reliable choice for indoor and outdoor charging.
The 20-foot cable was both durable and flexible, staying manageable even in cold weather—unlike cheaper alternatives that stiffen in low temperatures. The included protective carrying case made it easy to store and transport the Evgoer 40A charger as we traveled to parking lots and vocational rentals – the Evgoer 40A charger delivered convenient, reliable charging wherever I tested it, as long as there’s a compatible power source, this charger gets the job done.
Safety Features
Safety is a key aspect of this charger. It includes built-in protection against short circuits, current leakage, overheating, and overcharging. The S-PROTECH technology ensures efficient power delivery while preventing electrical issues. This charger also features a grounding system that minimizes risks during operation.
One standout feature is the thermal monitoring system, which automatically reduces current flow if it detects overheating, preventing damage to the vehicle or outlet. Additionally, the LED indicators provide clear status updates, making it easy to monitor charging progress at a glance.
