Add to compare

We highly recommend the Tesla Universal Wall Connector for homeowners with a Tesla, particularly those looking to future-proof their EV charging setup. Its bi-directional charging capability makes it an excellent choice for integrating with solar EV charging systems. This feature also makes it the ideal charger for the Tesla Cybertruck, which supports vehicle-to-grid (V2G) functionality through its Powershare feature.

What we like:

  • Sleek design that integrates well with modern homes.
  • Integrates well with home solar systems since it offers bi-directional EV charging.
  • Compatible with all EVs (thanks to the built-in J1772 adapter).
  • Fast charging speeds (up to 11.5 kW on a 48-amp circuit).
  • Wi-Fi connectivity for over-the-air updates and remote monitoring.
  • Easy installation with flexible mounting options.

What we don’t like:

  • Price. It’s on the higher end for home chargers.
  • For smart EV charging, the Tesla app requires some features, which might not be available to non-Tesla owners.

I expected the Universal Wall Connector to deliver solid performance, but its compatibility and thoughtful design exceeded expectations especially when it comes to compatibility with home systems powered by the Tesla solar system, or any other home solar system for that matter.

Note: The Tesla Wall Connector circuit diagram above represents our home solar EV charging system, which is integrated with a Tesla Wall Connector and a Tesla PowerWall. The EV charger is not running on a maximum 48A circuit, but rather a 40A circuit due to the configuration of our home solar system. However, we have included a wiring diagram for a 48A circuit without the Home Solar System integration below.

The charger’s ability to work seamlessly with non-Tesla vehicles makes it a standout choice in a crowded market.

Installation requires a professional electrician and may necessitate a panel upgrade if you have a 100-amp panel that is already crowded with circuits. The charger is hardwired only and requires a 60-amp dedicated circuit breaker and a 48-amp electric vehicle branch circuit to deliver its maximum output. Once installed, its sleek form factor blends beautifully into any garage or outdoor setup.

The Wi-Fi-enabled features, like remote monitoring and updates, add convenience, ensuring it stays future-proof as EV technology evolves. Charging speeds were consistent and fast, and the included J1772 adapter ensured effortless compatibility with other EVs.

Conclusion: A top-tier future-proof home charger for Tesla owners and non-Tesla owners alike.

Recommendation: Put it at the top of your list if you’re upgrading or purchasing a new home EV charger, especially for the Tesla Cybertruck or with solar EV charging in mind. Its advanced smart charging capabilities, seamless solar integration, outstanding performance, and versatility make it a worthwhile investment.

The Tesla Universal Wall Connector scored 9.3 on our EV Charger 10-point rating system, earning the top spot. View the full review on Electric Vehicle Geek.

The build quality is top-notch, and the charger feels sturdy and weatherproof, making it perfect for outdoor use. As for performance, the charging speeds are quick and reliable, delivering a consistent charge to my EV without issue.

The standout feature here is the Grizzl-E Connect App, which offers real-time monitoring, the ability to set charging schedules, and even manage energy usage. While it’s a great tool, there’s room for improvement in terms of user interface and ease of use.

The Grizzl-E charger’s flexibility in terms of current adjustment is another huge plus. Whether you’re charging overnight at home or need a quick top-up, it has you covered. Plus, it’s capable of charging a variety of JI772-compatible EVs, making it a great all-rounder for households with more than one electric vehicle.

The Tesla Gen 3 Wall Connector requires hardwired installation on a 48Amps dedicated circuit for maximum output configurations, which requires a licensed electrician or certified EV charger installer to install the home EV charger.

I recommend the Tesla Gen 3 Wall Connector for anyone who wants a reliable, fast, and efficient solution for charging their Tesla or other compatible electric vehicles.

What I like:

  • Significantly faster charging speeds compared to standard outlets.
  • Sleek, modern design that blends well with most home exteriors.
  • Easy installation process and a variety of mounting options.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi for software updates and energy tracking.
  • Works seamlessly with Tesla vehicles and provides efficient power delivery.

What I don’t like:

  • Price. Compared to the Tesla Universal Wall Connector, and the Grizzle Smart EV charger, It’s on the higher end for home chargers based on its features, but it’s hard to deny its performance.

I expected the Tesla Gen 3 Wall Connector to be superior, just like the Tesla Wall Connector, but it exceeded my expectations. It offers almost all the smart EV charging features that the Tesla Universal Wall Connector provides, except bi-directional EV charging. I was pleasantly also surprised by how well it integrates with the Tesla app, even for non-Tesla owners, allowing me to track the current state, monitor energy usage, and review previous charging sessions.

Conclusion: Ideal for Tesla owners and non-Tesla owners who want fast, hassle-free charging at home.

The ChargePoint Home Flex is a versatile and reliable option for any EV owner. Its ability to charge at various amperages means it can cater to different homes and user needs, making it an adaptable choice for households with one or multiple EVs.

While it doesn’t have power-sharing functionality like some competitors, such as the Tesla Wall Connector, its charging speed, and reliability more than makeup for it.

How We Review Home EV Chargers

At Electric Vehicle Geek, we provide clear and unbiased reviews of home EV chargers. Our goal is to help you choose the right charger for your EV charging needs.

Our Approach

We purchase and test each product we review, selecting top-selling EV chargers from online marketplaces, trending models from online communities and forums, and products our readers suggest.

We put each charger through a variety of stress tests and use them for several weeks before scoring them with our unique 10-point rating system. Our assessments focus on performance, reliability, and ease of use. We do not accept payments or sponsorships that could influence our reviews.

Product Selection Criteria

We focus on chargers that deliver top performance, durability, and user experience. Each product undergoes thorough testing to meet high standards for home EV charging.

Electric Vehicle Geek EV Charger 10-Point Scoring System

We test each charger through stress tests and real-world scenarios, culminating in a precise 10-point score. This process sets us apart as an industry leader.

Here’s how we assess chargers:

  • Features: We evaluate technical specifications, key features, and safety elements like GFCI, surge protection, overcurrent protection, and temperature monitoring. High scores go to products with advanced features and strong safety protocols.
  • Real-World Usage: We assess charging speed, consistency, and ease of use in various conditions. This includes cable length and user convenience in everyday settings.
  • Materials: We rate the quality and sustainability of materials. High scores are awarded to chargers made with durable, eco-friendly components.
  • Durability: We test how well the charger resists water, dust, extreme temperatures, and physical stress. A higher score indicates a charger built to withstand the elements and function reliably over time.
  • Craftsmanship: We examine the quality of connectors, cable, housing, and overall build. High scores reflect superior construction and attention to detail for safety and longevity.
  • Design: We consider aesthetic appeal, portability, functionality, and ease of installation. Chargers that are user-friendly and visually appealing with features like cable management earn high scores.
  • Monetary Value: We compare prices to similar models, factoring in features, warranty, and maintenance costs. High scores show great value for the price.
  • Product Value: We assess overall performance and long-term value. A high score means the charger provides excellent performance and features relative to its price.
  • Brand Reputation: We measure the brand’s history, customer support, and trust in the market. High scores indicate a strong reputation for quality and service.
  • Expert Valuation: Based on our testing, a high score reflects our expert rating for the charger’s performance and features.

The final score is a total of these categories, providing a simple, clear overview of each charger’s strengths to help you make an informed decision.
