How the Schumacher SC1455 Dual-Voltage EV Charger Works.

Architecture of a dual-voltage EV charger, illustrating the “logic hub” control system that enables safe operation across 120V and 240V power sources via intelligent adapter sensing and multi-threshold safety monitoring.
The Schumacher SC1455 is a dual-voltage EV charger that supports both Level 1 (120V) and Level 2 (240V) charging through interchangeable plug adapters. Unlike many modern portable dual voltage EV chargers, it operates at a fixed 16-amp output and does not offer adjustable current settings, companion apps, or automatic power scaling.
The charger comes with a native NEMA 6-20 plug for 240V outlets and includes an adapter that allows it to connect to compatible 120V household circuits. Because it always draws 16 amps, the Level 1 adapter should only be used with a 20-amp household circuit. Standard 15-amp outlets are not suitable and may trip the circuit breaker.
Charging performance depends on the available voltage. On a 120V circuit, the SC1455 delivers approximately 1.9 kW, adding about 4-6 miles of driving range per hour. Connected to a 240V outlet, output increases to 3.8 kW, providing roughly 11 to 15 miles of range per hour. The charger also features an extra-long 28-foot cable and a J1772 connector compatible with most non-Tesla EVs, while Tesla owners can charge using a J1772-to-NACS adapter.
Compared with Lectron dual-voltage EV chargers, both chargers support automatic switching between Level 1 and Level 2 charging through interchangeable adapters. However, Lectron models generally offer significantly higher charging speeds, with outputs of up to 32 or 40 amps (7.7–9.6 kW), depending on the model, along with intelligent power management and additional features such as LCDs. In contrast, the Schumacher SC1455 is designed as a straightforward, budget-friendly portable charger with a fixed 16-amp output, making it better suited for drivers with modest daily charging needs rather than those seeking the fastest possible home charging.

Recommended NEMA 5-15 Extension Cords
If your Schumacher 16 Amp EV Charger doesn’t reach your vehicle, a NEMA 5-15 extension cord can help. This cord allows you to charge in places with limited outlet access, such as garages, driveways, or outdoor areas.

An extension cable offers extra flexibility, making it easier to position your charger where you need it.

They also fit the charger plug and cable properly.
Schumacher 16 Amp Rebates & Tax Credits
The Schumacher 16 Amp is a simple, portable charger that qualifies for the 30% federal tax credit. Without connected software, it sits outside the utility’s smart programs that offer cash back, so your savings rely on the federal credit and its low upfront price.
