Key Features of the Battery Tender eCharge 40 AMP EV Charger
The Battery Tender eCharge 40 AMP EV Charger is a Level 2 charger with a 240V power input and a robust 40A output current. It is available with either a NEMA 14-50P plug or a hardwired connection, offering installation flexibility. Designed for indoor and outdoor use, it is built with high-quality materials to ensure long-lasting durability and performance.
Battery Tender eCharge 40 AMP EV Charger Installation
Installing the Battery Tender eCharge 40 AMP EV charger requires either a NEMA 14-50 circuit or a hardwired connection, depending on the charger’s input type. Both options must connect to a 240V power supply to function properly.
The NEMA 14-50 outlet runs on 240V and has a 50-amp rating, but for this installation, it’s best to set the EV charger to a continuous 40A. This outlet has four terminals: two hot wires (L1 and L2), a neutral wire (N), and a ground wire (G). The wiring diagram below shows the proper setup for the 40 AMP Battery Tender eCharge EV Charger NEMA 14-50P.
40 AMP Battery Tender eCharge EV Charger NEMA 14-50P Circuit Wiring Diagram
For this installation, a dedicated 240V, 40A circuit was run from the electrical panel. The wiring setup included 6 AWG wires for the hot, neutral, and ground connections. A 50A double-pole breaker was installed to handle the charger’s power draw safely. To protect the wiring and ensure compliance with safety standards, everything was enclosed in ¾ to 1-inch Schedule 40 conduit. The circuit diagram below illustrates the full wiring layout which delivered a steady 9.6kW output.
Battery Tender eCharge 40 AMP EV Charger Compatible NEMA 14-50 Outlets
For reliable charging, using a high-quality NEMA 14-50 outlet is essential. These outlets meet the necessary electrical standards and provide a secure connection, ensuring stable power delivery to the charger.
Battery Tender eCharge 40 AMP EV Charger Compatible Outlet Covers
Installing an outlet cover adds an extra layer of safety. These covers prevent accidental contact with live components, help deter tampering, and improve the overall appearance of the installations.
40 AMP Battery Tender eCharge EV Charger Hardwired Installation
For a hardwired installation, the charger was connected directly to the electrical panel to maximize efficiency. The wiring included 4-6 AWG wires for the hot connections, 6 AWG for neutral, and 4-8 AWG for ground. A 1 to 1¼-inch conduit was used to protect and organize the wiring as shown in our 40 AMP Battery Tender eCharge EV Charger Hardwired circuit diagram below:
At the electrical panel, a dedicated 50A double-pole breaker was installed. The hot wires were connected to their respective terminals, the neutral wire was secured to the neutral busbar, and the ground was properly bonded. A grounding rod was used to verify a stable ground connection.
After a final inspection of the circuit, the EV charger was powered on and delivered a steady 9.6kW output, ensuring consistent and efficient EV charging.
Battery Tender eCharge 40 AMP vs. Other eCharge Chargers
Battery Tender eCharge 40 AMP vs. eCharge 16 AMP
The eCharge 40 AMP offers a significantly higher output (40A vs. 16A) and operates exclusively on 240V, while the eCharge 16 AMP is limited to 120V. This makes the 40 AMP model a much faster charging solution for EV owners.
Battery Tender eCharge 40 AMP vs. eCharge 32 AMP
Both models are Level 2 chargers, but the eCharge 40 AMP provides a higher output (40A vs. 32A), allowing for faster charging times. However, the 32 AMP model has dual-voltage capability (120V & 240V), making it more versatile.
Battery Tender eCharge 40 AMP vs. eCharge 48 AMP
While the eCharge 48 AMP delivers even higher output (48A vs. 40A) for the fastest charging speeds, it requires a dedicated 240V circuit. The 40 AMP model balances power and compatibility, making it an excellent option for many EV users.
