As an EV charger installer, I’ve worked on numerous retrofit EV charger installation projects involving Federal Pacific panels. The biggest challenge with these panels is finding reliable and code-compliant breakers that fit properly. The Connecticut Electric UBIF240N solves this problem, fitting seamlessly into Federal Pacific Stab-Lok panels that accept NA-style (thick) breakers without requiring any modifications or panel upgrades. The JuiceBox 32 Amp EV charger circuit was plugged into a NEMA 14-50 outlet which was wired using 8 AWG copper THHN in ¾-inch PVC conduit, and the outlet was grounded to the panel’s bonded neutral/ground busbar as shown in the wiring diagram below:The electrical wiring diagram titled "32A EV Charger Wiring Diagram with UBIF240N Breaker" illustrates how to connect a 32A Level 2 EV charger to a Federal Pacific electrical panel, adhering to US National Electrical Code (NEC) standards. The diagram shows a single-phase 120/240V panel where power enters via L1 (Hot 1 - Black), L2 (Hot 2 - Red), and N (Neutral - White) wires, connecting to the main lugs. A warning indicates that these lugs are always live. Inside the panel, you'll find the main breaker, neutral busbar, ground busbar (G), and an electrical bond connecting the neutral and ground busbars. A dedicated 40A 2-Pole breaker (CB1 - 40A 2P Connecticut Electric UBIF240N) is used for the EV charger circuit. A note explains that according to the NEC 80% rule for continuous loads, a 32A charger requires a 40A breaker. From this breaker, L1 (Black) and L2 (Red) wires, along with a green ground wire (G) from the ground busbar, form the 240V EV Charger Branch Circuit using 8 AWG 90°C copper wire, running through ¾" conduit to the charger. The grounding system includes an earth conductor that connects the ground busbar to an external ground rod. The circuit terminates at a 4-prong yellow receptacle, similar to a NEMA 14-50 outlet, where a 32A Level 2 EV charger (providing 7.7kW at 240V) plugs in. Additional warnings in the diagram advise keeping wiring away from gutter posts and avoiding crossing wires over breakers. Another note suggests upsizing wires on long runs to limit voltage drop to under 3% per NEC. The diagram also features the "Electric Vehicle Geek" logo and is labeled "Single Phase Panel Wiring (US-NEC)".

The Connecticut Electric UBIF240N breaker handled the 32A EV charger continuously load effortlessly, showing no signs of dedicated EV charger circuit breaker tripping, overheating, or voltage instability, even during extended charging sessions.

This setup is an excellent example of how to safely and effectively integrate a 240V 32A Level 2 EV charger into an older Federal Pacific load center without requiring a costly panel replacement. The NA-style thick body fits securely into the Federal Pacific Stab-Lok panel, and the installation process is quick and straightforward.
