Below are our best home EV chargers for the Alfa Romeo Tonale. Each charger supports Level 2 charging at 240V, up to 32 amps, the Tonale’s maximum AC charging rate. They all use a J1772 connector, which fits the Tonale’s charging port and works with its J1772 signaling system. With our recommended chargers, a full charge takes 2.5 hours and adds about 13.2 miles of range per hour, making daily charging easy, safe, and fast.

We tested the Alfa Romeo Tonale’s OEM Level 1 charger and recommend upgrading to a 240V 32A Level 2 charger. Level 2 charging is about three times faster than Level 1, meaning much less time waiting for your vehicle to recharge.
In our testing, the Alfa Romeo Tonale’s 120V Level 1 OEM charger, shown above, took up to 8 hours to fully recharge the 15.5-kWh lithium-ion battery from 0% to 100%. By comparison, a 240V Level 2 charger (32A) delivered a full charge in about 2.5 hours, adding roughly 13.2 miles of range per hour. That’s why we recommend upgrading or replacing the OEM Level 1 charger with a 32A Level 2 charger, which makes daily charging faster, more efficient, more convenient, and cost-effective over the long term.
Feature | OEM Level 1 Charger (120V) | Recommended Level 2 Charger (240V, 32A) |
---|---|---|
Charge Time (0–100%) | Up to 8 hours | 2.5 hours |
Range Added per Hour | 4 miles | 13.2 miles |
Charging Level | Level 1 AC | Level 2 AC |
Convenience | Slow for daily use | Fast and convenient for daily charging |
Efficiency | Lower efficiency | Higher efficiency, cost-effective over time |
Recommendation | 120V Level 1 EV Charger | 240V 32A Level 2 EV Charger (Upgrade or replace for better performance) |

The Alfa Romeo Tonale’s onboard charger supports up to 32A of continuous AC charging. All of our recommended chargers’ amperage settings can be adjusted to 32A during installation, feature a J1772 connector, and use SAE J1772 signaling protocol for full compatibility and the fastest charging speed the Tonale allows, so you can pick any of our recommended models with confidence. Use our adjusted amperage filter to narrow results: choose 32A for best compatibility, go lower if your home panel can’t handle a 32A load, or pick a higher-amp charger to be ready for a second high-amperage EV or future-proofing your installation.
Keep in mind that chargers rated above 32A cost more and won’t charge the Tonale any faster, since its onboard charger is limited to 32A, while units rated below 32A will charge slower. In practice, a higher-amperage charger will simply be set to 32A during installation if your electrical panel supports a 32A EV charger installation. The real benefit of going higher is long-term flexibility, giving you the option to upgrade to a higher amperage EV without replacing your charger.
The 2025 Alfa Romeo Tonale Plug-in Hybrid is a compact SUV equipped with a 15.5-kWh lithium-ion battery and a 7.4 kW onboard charger. It can travel up to 33 miles on electric power alone and has a combined efficiency of 77 MPGe (approximately 44 kWh per 100 miles).
Charging depends on your region: North American models use a SAE J1772 charging inlet, while European models use a Type 2 charging inlet. Both support AC Level 1 and Level 2 home charging, but the Tonale is not designed for DC fast charging.
The image below shows a close-up of the Alfa Romeo Tonale’s SAE J1772 charging port, showing the five-pin inlet layout and inlet cover.
At home, a standard 120V outlet (Level 1) will fully charge the Alfa Romeo Tonale battery in roughly 8 hours, while a 240V Level 2 charger can complete a full charge in just 2.5 hours, adding about 13.2 miles of range per hour at the full 7.4 kW rate.
To support the Alfa Romeo Tonale’s Level 2 charger at 240V (7.4 kW, 32 amps) branch circuit, you need a dedicated 40-amp GFCI circuit breaker. Use 8 AWG copper wires inside a 1″ conduit, with a 10 AWG ground wire, as shown in the image below. Depending on your EV charger, the installation can be hardwired or outlet-based.
The diagram below illustrates the complete circuit layout for hardwiring a 32A Level 2 home charger to a NEMA 14-50 outlet. It highlights the dedicated 40A breaker, L1/L2/neutral/ground connections, proper conductor sizes, and grounding requirements to ensure a safe, NEC-compliant installation for the Alfa Romeo Tonale, designed for easy installation and flexible use.
The wiring diagram below explains how to hardwire a 32A Level 2 charger directly into a dedicated 40A breaker for the Alfa Romeo Tonale. It shows the complete 32A EV charger branch circuit from the main electrical panel through a junction box and into the charger, with clear labeling of L1, L2, and ground conductors. The layout also covers busbar connections, conductor sizing, and breaker requirements in line with NEC safety codes, providing a safer, permanent, and better long-term installation.
We recommend accessories that make charging your Alfa Romeo Tonale easier, safer, and more convenient. For public charging stations that don’t have a J1772 charger, a Tesla to J1772 Adapter allows you to use Tesla chargers and reduce range anxiety. To protect your Tonale home charger, the ChargeWrap lock box securely locks the unit and prevents theft. For maintenance and troubleshooting, EV diagnostic tools like the Fluke FEV150 or Autel Maxisys help ensure your installation stays in top condition.
